A Good Friday Message to a Bad Virus.

Your marvelous doings are headline news; I could write a book full of the details of your greatness. Psalm 145:6 (The Message)

Today is Good Friday, the day Christians acknowledge Jesus’ death on the cross two thousand years ago. It was a willful delivery of his spirit into the hands of God as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world. (John 3:16) When he came back to life in glorious resurrection three days later, he put an end to the sting of death for those who believe in his name. (I Corinthians 15:55-57)

With that in mind, I have a message for COVID-19, a Very Bad Virus:

Through the limited view of human eyes and reasoning, this all seems like nothing but one big tragic mess. But then I consider you through God’s perspective and my heart eases a bit.

Now, I see that scowl, hear the rumblings of discontent and sense the rise of fury over my comment. But really, despite great loss, much good has come because of you.

Since my gym is closed, I’ve been nudged out of the house to take more frequent walks. Turns out I’ve got really awesome neighbors. We wave from safe distance, exchange greetings and a smile. It’s caused me to more frequently consider the well-being of my elderly neighbor, seek ways to minister to him. Since we can’t eat at our favorite restaurant after church this Easter, he’ll be joining us at for a meal at our house.

This is good!

This week I learned that there’s a team of MICU/SICU nurses who are working on the front lines at a trauma center in Fort Worth, Texas, who’ve used this opportunity and the risks it presents as an opportunity to pray together at the outset of their shift. Among them are non-believers who’ve welcomed the holy protection and have expressed interest in knowing the Source.

This is good!

Families are gathering around the table, sharing stories and spending valuable time together…fathers engaging in a game of catch, mothers demonstrating how easy it is to bake an apple pie. With that comes learning to communicate well, giving thought to the words we say and whether or not they build up or tear down.

This is good!

Forced home education has given much-needed appreciation to educators at every level, all over the world. Co-workers who are deemed essential have put differences aside and begun to value one another.

This is good!

Star gazing on the rise, reveling in the ethereal beauty of a waxing moon. It’s caused people to incline their hearts and minds to the limitless Creator of it all, maybe fall more deeply in love with Jesus.

Or for the first time.

This is good!

Churches unable to welcome folks beyond maximum seating capacity are garnering online viewers in increasing number. There’s no limit to how many can attend churches now!

You, COVID-19, mean to destroy. And you have. But as a result, many have turned attention to Jesus and left their fear at the foot of the cross, embracing its significance. Their eternity now changed to a forever dwelling place with God.

All because of a highly-contagious virus.

The number 19 brings one of my favorite verses to mine. The nineteenth chapter of Revelation, verse 11:

I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse whose rider is called Faithful and True. (NIV)

Like the Psalmist said about God, “I could write a book full of the details of your greatness.”

No doubt all this good news makes you cringe, bad Virus, but, you see, God is using what you meant for evil to draw more people  into his kingdom (Genesis 50:20).

So while you’ve taken much, you also serve as a powerful reminder of the resurrected Jesus’ triumphant return to set all things to rights and welcome his followers into a blessed, virus-free, heavenly home.
