For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 (NAS)
That is, the free gift of God is eternal life.
FREE: Given or available without charge. At least, no charge to my account.
Just once I’d like to receive a slick and colorful postcard in the mail that simply says,
Free Gift. WithOUT purchase.
Supplies guaranteed to last.
Quantities aren’t limited.
Offer never expires.
Imagine that, the redemption of an undeserved, free gift that didn’t require anything of me except, maybe the minimal cost of gas to go claim the thing.
Sure, I’ve acquired pens, t-shirts, sticky notes…all manner of free “gifts” that didn’t require me to answer a survey or listen to a sale’s pitch. But, for the life of me, I can’t find a workable pen when I need one. Key here, workable. Because it sure sends me into orbit when I find one separated into several parts, inking up the inside of my purse.
Those free t-shirts? I’ve given them as donations or added them to the “I need to have a yard sale” pile.
And the sticky notes? Yeah, buried beneath the rubble in which drawer?
…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 (NAS)
God’s gift of salvation, the promise of eternal life is free. It cost me nothing but to believe and receive. No breaking a sweat here. Yet it cost God the life of His one and only Son.
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
And I didn’t go redeem this free gift, He redeemed me.
You did not choose Me, but I chose you. John 15:16
God even sweetened the deal with a bonus gift. He snatched me from His wrath. Because the wages of sin has to be paid. And for quite the price.
For the wages of sin is death… Romans 6:23
Oh, such love God lavished on me! Even knowing my private thoughts, the intentions of my heart, my sometimes crooked motivations.
Ah, but there’s a catch. I’m to give that free-gift-without-purchase away. Over and over, without requiring anything of the recipient. This I command you, that you love one another John 15:17
