Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.
“Is That a Thing?”
I hear it often, people with knitted brow and wrinkled noses randomly questioning if a tradition, a phrase, a way of doing business is still ‘a thing’.
— such as leaf peeping to, I dunno, men who sneeze into linen handkerchiefs — which, quite frankly, should never have become ‘a thing’ in the first place.
There are ‘things’ that are no longer ‘things’.
For example, the manufacture of avocado green Tupperware bowls, Edsels, and unbendable Barbies. There are no new episodes of Twilight Zone. Aside from the fact that the show host, Rod Serling, is dead, the classic science-fiction anthology is no longer a thing. Appliances that continue to function long after the manufacturer’s warranty expires are…in my experience… no longer a thing. At first sound of a squeaking belt or a wicked shimmy, I’ve wondered if durable, quality craftsmanship in the world of washing machines was ever a thing?
The swift arrival of ‘new and improved’ and perpetual technology updates quickly shove aside what was once a thing.
In this rapidly changing world, what lasts? Is anything still a thing?
Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.
That’s what lasts. Jesus and His word are still a thing. Even surpassing the greatness of an ice cold (Diet) Coca-Cola with its powerfully effective ad campaign, It’s the real thing.
The immutable Jesus and His word are still a Thing. They always were a Thing and will remain a Thing forevermore.
They are The Real Thing.
So have a (Diet) Coke and a smile 🙂 ‘Cause that’s still a thing, too.
