Love Like That.

Watch what God does and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with Him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of Himself to us. Love like that.

Ephesians 5:1-2


The period at the end of that sentence riveted my heart like a hammer to the chest. When my eyes tripped across each of those last three words, my soul felt the impact. Its message rippled down to my toes. 

I’d been praying through a situation, struggling with how to love well in the midst of it, when God gave me a vision of Himself. He stood, robed in white linen, His eyes tender and filled with compassion when He spoke: 

“I love you.”

Tears trickled down my cheeks as I inclined my heart to His. I snatched the ‘I love you’ like an orphan child offered a fresh-baked pastry and tasted the sweetness of it, letting the extravagant affirmation soak in. But wasn’t His message over and done? (Pssst. It’s never over and done) When I looked again, God was still standing there, this time with the palms of His nail-scarred hands upturned before He added, 

“Love like this.”

My shoulders drooped a bit.

In true God fashion, He allowed my eyes to land on this truth again when reading scripture the following day:  

Love like that. Ephesians 5:2b


Love. Like. That

Pretty straightforward. Simply watch what God does and then do it. Okay, so He loved – and loves – extravagantly and all I gotta do is love like that. Hmmm. That requires me to give up things, to release my stuff, to share my time, to serve those whom I’ve deemed ‘undeserving’ – when I’d really rather head up the mount to be alone with God, thank-you-very-much.  

To love like that isn’t so easy.

I’d like to snag the convenient excuse that God gave me crappy parents who didn’t model God’s love well, exempting me from the command to love like that, but that would be a lie. A really big one. But even if this were true, God is my perfect parent and His command remains immutable. 

Ultimately, I must die to self.

Watch what God does and then you do it…Love like that.

Mostly what God does is love you…Love like that.

Observe how Christ loved us…extravagant…to give everything of Himself to us.

And…Love. Like. That. Period.
