The Devil’s Got Binge Eating Disorder.

The enemy boasted, “I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils;

I will gorge myself on them.”

Exodus 15:9

I’ve discovered another problem with the Devil. He has Binge Eating Disorder (BED). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, 2013,, individuals with BED display some or all of the following characteristics:

~Eating alone, stealing, hiding, or hoarding food.

I know the Devil steals. He does a lot of his work in the dark. I imagine he might eat, er, gorge, secretly at times.

~Eating throughout the day with no planned mealtimes.

The Devil is impulsive, the opposite of which is self-control, a fruit of the Spirit…which he hasn’t got.

~Developing food rituals such as eating only a particular food or food group.

Humans obeying Christ. Yeah, those are his favorites.

~Consuming large quantities of food within a short period of time, an amount that is definitely larger than what most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances.

“He’s wild and raging with anger; he hasn’t much time and he knows it.” Revelation 12:12b.

~Creating lifestyle schedules or rituals to make time for binge sessions.

God singled out Satan and said, “What have you been up to?” Satan answered God, “Going here and there, checking things out on earth.” Job 1:7 (The Message)

“Your enemy the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” I Peter 5:8

The Devil’s got BED. With an agenda.

I will pursue… I will overtake… I will divide…I will gorge. Exodus 15:9.

The Devil isn’t a nibbler. Nor is he just lousy company with bad table manners. He’s downright ravenous. And filled with fury as he gorges, fully aware of his eternal doom, that his time is limited with each tick of the clock.

But what did Jesus eat?

His disciples urged Him to eat. “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of Him Who sent me and to accomplish His work.” (John 4:34)

"It is finished."

“It is finished.”

And He did, with what sounds to me like a super-hero ending. “It is finished.” (John 19:30)

How did Jesus eat?

Exercising self-control, a fruit of His Spirit.

So what’s on today’s menu? Same as always.

The word of God. “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.” Psalm 119:103

The Bread of life. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.” John 6:51

And that which is good. “Listen, listen to Me and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.” Isaiah 55:2b

I set a napkin in my lap, grabbed a holy fork, the pages of His word like a banquet before me. “Sounds divine!”

When the Devil’s eye catches the fellowship of Believers, I imagine he sees one mega large bowl of M&M’s.

But I’ve been duly warned about this mentally disordered minion. I must be self-controlled and alert, keeping watch for a bingeing Devil-lion – who doesn’t answer to the name ‘Aslan’. And I must remove my hand from the world’s candy. It’s typically coated with cyanide anyway.
