The Pitch of Praise.

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Hebrews 12:11

Having never taken a piano lesson in my life, I didn’t think I had anything in common with those incredible stringed instruments.

I was mistaken…

In order to tune a piano properly, each string must endure several tons of pressure (eleven or more). A quality tuning tool is required and best handled by a specialist who knows what he’s doing – despite the myriads of on-line DIY piano tuning tutorials that suggest otherwise.

The piano that sits in our family room was tuned. Once. Years ago.

A few months following, one of my children sat down to practice her recital piece. In short order, I heard the obvious:  piano tuning isn’t a one and done deal.

No wonder enthusiast and faithful piano owners see to consistent and regular tuning.

It eliminates discord.

Even if no one is in the room to hear that thing, God is listening.

It’s difficult enough to endure one stringed instrument that’s badly out of tune. Imagine an entire orchestra performing with out-of-tune instruments.

So tuning…

Can you feel that? The pulling, the tension, the fear of snapping?

My hand is raised.

Recent months have stretched long waiting for answers, praying for strength to persevere. Oh, sure, some answers arrived, but they brought great disappointment. Even heartache.

Lord, please stop the stretching.

Clink, clink, clink…

Seems you’re still out of tune.

Hebrews 12:11

God allows difficulty when something in me is out of tune. Question is, do I resist the persistent and skilled twisting of His tuning tool or do I desire to be in tune with the music He’s creating in my life? Even knowing it’ll hurt? Or be costly?

When a key in me is struck, do I respond with a discordant whine and flat clink? Or reverberate with the sweet pitch of praise?

Strain and stretching is unavoidable. So what about you? Will you withstand the tons of pressure in order to reap a harvest of peace and for the good of the entire orchestra?
