…Until the Nest is Upset.

“It sounds so easy to talk about “resting in the Lord” and “waiting patiently for Him” until the nest is upset.” Oswald Chambers, July 4

I’m pretty fond of my nest, thank you very much. In it, I’ve placed my husband, my four children, my girlfriends, my little community, the holy huddle of my church family. I’ve built it plenty big enough to hold my goals, my desires, my carefully planned agenda. And, of course, all my stuff.

Occasionally, I’ll gaze longingly at my nest perched high in a sturdy oak tree. And find rest for my soul. Until that nest is upset – and out tumbles my people, my plans, my property. Or worse, I find it’s been robbed by an unseen predator.

Talk about an angry bird :/  My default response hasn’t been resting or patience.

And who the heck saw all that coming? God did. He who helped craft my nest also engineered the circumstances that upset it. All the while, His power-packed, three-word command doesn’t change.

“Do not fret – it leads only to evil.” Psalm 37:8

The subject of this inspired scripture is understood to be you. “(You) do not fret.”

Read that way, it’s tinged with a bit of parental warning. God hasn’t made a suggestion here. How more straightforward can this scripture be? No need for head-scratching perplexity.

Still, doubts plague. “No fretting? But Lord, You’ve seen my nest. You know how difficult things are right now.”

He nodded with a smile, while cradling my yesterday, today, and tomorrow in His hands. “Do not fret. And what’s more, beloved, I’ll remind you what I told the disciples. Come to Me…and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Another commanding, non-suggestive, parental warning. You come for rest.

“Ah, rest. I could use some.”

He already knows. “Whether that nest of yours is upset or not. I desire you become restfully certain.”

“Fretting springs from a determination to get our own way.”  (Oswald)

“Do not fret ~ it leads only to evil”

Fret. Alas, I add another objectionable “f” word to the list. Ranks right up there with, yeah, that one. Fat 🙁

With regard to the command that I do not fret, I do so love The Message translation of Psalm 37:8 ~

“Bridle your anger, trash your wrath, cool your pipes ~ it only makes things worse.”

And He has.

So I will.

No matter the state of my nest.
