My Father Paid for That

You were bought at a price ... You were bought at a price.

I Corinthians 6:20, 7:23 [NIV]

Go ahead. Tell me the price of postage is going up. Again.

See if I shudder.

I won't.

Because among the things my brothers and sisters received after Dad died was his very sizable volume of U.S. postage stamps. He collected several volumes and lovingly placed the shiny sheets of stamps in three ring stamp binders.

Often, he’d take a binder off the shelf and run his hand along the plastic protector pages, admiring the stamps. Sadly, I never really shared his interest in these treasures.

To my surprise (and that of my siblings), stamp clubs in Texas weren’t interested in purchasing what we were certain was the mother lode.

Board members from a club in Austin respectfully informed us that the best way to honor our dad was to use his stamps for postage.

Once resigned to the idea, we agreed to divide the collection among us and took our portion to our homes.

At no cost to us.

Due to the vast array of stamps I place on envelopes (73 cents, y’all!) and packages, I’m known by local post office staff as “the stamp lady”—a title I’m happy to bear.

“My Dad paid for the postage,” I explain.

But the stamps weren’t free for Dad.

I’m the recipient of an unmerited gift.

To take full advantage of this grace, my only requirement is to use them.

Imagine if I’d disregarded those costly stamps, stuffed them in a cabinet, only to be forgotten. What a senseless waste of the price Dad paid!

We were all bought at an inestimable price. The free gift of grace is available to everyone who will receive it.

Our heavenly Father paid the price by sending his son Jesus to be the sacrifice for our sins.

The price has been fully paid.

Stamp lady wants to know ... Have you taken advantage of this unmerited gift?
