The King's Business

I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days.
Then I got up and went about the king's business.
Daniel 8:27 [NIV]
After a series of disturbing prophetic visions, Daniel was understandably exhausted and lay ill on his bed. This favored man of God was believed to be in his 80's at this point, exiled with his three pals in Babylon from the time he was an adolescent.
Can't you just feel the ache in Daniel's bones?
But after several days, Daniel got up and continued where he left off, doing the king’s business.
Hadn't he been through enough? I'm thinking ... "Daniel, sir. Take it easy. You've earned your reward."
But Daniel knew that there was more kingdom business to do.

As Christians, we are all called into business for the King of kings.
One of the most demanding aspects of the kingdom business God has given me is writing romance. Chapters woven together by a spiritual thread that binds two hearts together in a satisfying happily ever after—while organically pointing the reader to God Who's behind the flawed characters' transformation.
Puzzling over how to effectively wreck the lives of imaginary characters and piece them back together gets to be emotionally and mentally exhausting.
I've waved a white flag of surrender at God on more than one occasion.
When I'm stuck on a scene or plot point, I'll gravitate toward doing anything but ... write.
That's when I hear the Spirit’s whisper: Go about the King’s business.
Every opportunity, every location, every circumstance passes through God’s sovereign hand before it’s assigned to us. Those things are within the realm of the King’s business.
How are we expanding God's kingdom as we interact with others? How are we using His gifts of time and resources?
Will you find me furiously cleaning a bathroom that doesn't need it rather than writing? Or doom-scrolling on social media rather than engaging others in conversation about my King?
What about you? Weary and distracted as we might become, the King’s business is our business.
The more we lean into Him to restore and refresh us for service to Him, seeking opportunities where they may be found, the greater His kingdom will be.
