The Everlasting Light

The sun will no longer be your light by day nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Isaiah 60:19

Were you among the millions who watched Monday's eclipse?

Donning safety glasses, Americans situated themselves within or near the path of totality to witness a historic cosmological event—the solar eclipse.

Traveling in its orbit miles above the earth, the moon intersected the sun—a star 400 times larger and farther away than the moon—and eclipsed the blinding sunlight. During its trek over North America, a shadow approximately 123 miles wide moved over 15 states.

In awestruck wonder, we experienced darkness fall over our lawns, houses, buildings. (in my case, an apartment parking lot) Then the moon continued on its way and the brilliant sun was visible again.

A collective sigh of relief. Because without the light of the sun, we're all doomed.

But when God makes his final descent from the heavens to earth, the sun will have achieved its purpose and will bow to Jesus, the bright Morning Star. [Revelation 22:16]

The Lord will be your everlasting light … the Lord will be your everlasting light. [Isaiah 60:19, 20]

The repetition of these verses gives this sense of urgency, like,

“Did you catch that? You aren’t going to need sunlight nor moonlight. The Lord will be your everlasting light.”

God the Creator lovingly and intelligently provides the sun as a source of life until the everlasting, glorious light of his presence is all we'll need.

No more traffic lights or sunburn or insects flying around my front porch light. Hallelujah.

But ... until that day arrives, we're urged to offer the fruit of light—goodness, righteousness, and truth—to a world perpetually shadowed by spiritual darkness. [Ephesians 5:8-9]

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine ...🎶

Points to Ponder

✶ What blocks the light of God from shining through you?

✶How can you practically offer the fruit of God's everlasting light to others?

✶How are you encouraged by God's promise to be the only light we'll need?
